About Me

Counsellor in Letchworth

Hello my name is Jan De-Vyott and I am an experienced counsellor and clinical supervisor. I qualified as a counsellor in 2007 and later in my career as a clinical supervisor providing guidance to counsellors, student counsellors, social workers and frontline support staff. I work with the person-centered and trauma informed approaches.

In addition to my counselling background, I am a qualified mediator, restorative approaches practitioner, facilitator, trainer and assessor who has worked within a variety of sectors providing educational, conflict resolution and therapeutic interventions. I have a wealth of experience having supported individuals within schools and adult education, mental health services, local authorities, addiction & recovery, criminal justice settings, and within private practice.

I also support employers with employee assistance programmes as part of their continued commitment to the wellbeing of their staff. I believe that when people feel well that they do well and therefore have a particular interest in supporting people to live a good life.

I am an accredited registrant of the National Counselling and Psychotherapy Society (NCPS) and am fully insured.

How Counselling Helps

Counselling will help you gain greater insight into the difficulties you are facing, help you understand why you feel the way you do or react to situations, and look at how you can take this insight moving forward. You may have identified that you need time to renew your perspective, and explore pathways for growth and motivation. You might need space to regroup and reflect, or just feel better and more positive about life. I will listen carefully, with care and empathy to help you make sense of things.

I have counselled people who have experienced many difficult, painful or tangled emotions. For example those with depression, anxiety, feelings of isolation or being stuck, identity or belonging, work issues, or those who need support with their relationships, or who have experienced loss. Working alongside my clients has helped them to feel more balanced and heard, positive and less alone with their feelings or thoughts.

My counselling style offers a place where you can be comfortable to bring whatever is on your mind. It is important that you feel safe and secure to bring whatever content you want to sessions and do not feel judged with what you share. I do not give my clients the "right" answers, but facilitate sessions where they are supported to find their own.

Overall sessions allow time to focus on what matters to you so that you work towards a clearer outlook.

My Counselling Approach

I offer therapeutic support and guidance through a skilled, non-judgmental, down-to-earth and safe approach which enables you to talk and have the space to think things over or heal.

It is a big and courageous step to decide to contact a counsellor. I am here to help and reassure you that I will listen with care and sensitivity, and without judgement, in a safe and confidential space where you are free to be yourself.

Frequently asked questions

How long will I have to wait for an appointment?

My aim is to offer a free 20 minute online or telephone consultation within a week. If it was agreed that you would like to choose to make a further appointment following the consultation then we would arrange a counselling session to take place that is convenient for you and where I have availability. How quickly these sessions can begin will depend on the time slot being available.

How long will I need to have counselling?

The time someone chooses to stay in counselling is different for each person. For some people just a few sessions helps to bring the subject into focus, and they feel ready to move forward; other subjects or deeper and more complex issues that might require more time to explore and therefore take more time. I regularly review progress with the clients that I am working with so that they feel empowered and encouraged to reflect on what they have accomplished.

Will everything I say be kept confidential?

Everything that is discussed within the counselling sessions is private - this is one of the main ways counselling and therapy differ from talking to a friend or relative. Breaking confidentiality is very rare though and where practical the matter is discussed with the client first and the reason for this. It is only in exceptional circumstances where there are safeguarding concerns or risks of harm to yourself or someone else that this would ever happen.

What happens if I can't make my session?

Cancellations with less than 24hrs notice will be charged at the normal fee. If it is possible to rearrange another appointment in the same week, cancellation fees will not apply.
